VJ Stanley was a three sport varsity athlete in high school and won the school’s first ever Leadership Award. As an athlete, VJ won the high school hockey league scoring title as a junior and was a First All-Star Selection. In his senior year, he received Second All-Star Honors and also played junior hockey for the Rochester Monarchs. He went on to play hockey at Clarkson University where he sustained two concussions in one week which ended his career after only one game.

VJ is the youngest high school hockey coach in Monroe County high school hockey history starting his coaching career at twenty-three years of age. His teams set thirteen records at Fairport High School. He has consulted for the Aquinas Institute hockey team during their Section V championship season and the Greece Hockey team, who won their first hockey State Championship ever. He was the head hockey coach at the University of Rochester for 21 years and coached youth sports for 15. VJ was a volunteer coach for two years with inner city children learning to play hockey and started the first ever modified program of any kind at Siena Catholic Academy, which still flourishes today along with other boys’ and girls’ modified programs.

VJ founded Balanced Excellence as an answer to his family's and friends’ constant questions about the stress associated with their children's participation in youth sports.

Balanced Excellence is a youth sports consulting company dedicated to long-term athletic development, mental health, and the pure enjoyment of playing youth sports for fun. Our mission is to engage children through youth sports by having them play for fun with Balanced Excellence.

The Balanced Excellence Training Method (BETM) teaches youth organizations the benefits for children, coaches, and parents now participating in youth sports that participation and continued activity should be a primary goal of all youth sports.

Our approach simplifies and balances children’s athleticism, both mentally and physically. This approach embraces the fact that they ARE children, not mini adults or micro professional athletes. We provide and model leadership for the development of theory, research, and applied practice to youth sports, exercise, and healthy activity.

The Balanced Exellence Training Method is an organic, holistic approach to teaching and coaching kids. Not only do we teach kids the fundamentals of the youth sports games they play for fun, but we are continually finding ways to model positive behavior, and the importance of community, accountability, humility, and manners.
